"The best epic saga of the prewar period"
Czesław Miłosz: History of Polish Literature
Nights And Days

The Author:
Maciej Słomczyński ("Joe Alex") remains Eastern Europe's preeminent translator of English literature. He has translated all of Shakespeare; Milton's Paradise Lost; Swift's Gulliver's Travels; Carroll's Alice in Wonderland; James Joyce's Ulysses. He has also authored detective mysteries and--our current series: The Ships of Minos.
The tale:
In 1970, when this tale was first published, Eastern Europe was a terra incognita, an unknown world, yet to be discovered by the West. Joe Alex took the tale back three thousand years and said: back in the days of the Minoan Empire we were also unknown. But we were there. There were kingdoms, nations, religions. Here are Minoans discovering us.
